Crown thinning, lifting, reduction and deadwooding to keep your trees healthy, safe and looking their best year-round.
Good pruning isn't just about aesthetics. it's about the long-term health and structural integrity of your trees. Over-pruning, topping, or removing the wrong branches at the wrong time of year causes lasting damage. Greenman follows best-practice pruning standards to ensure your trees thrive after every cut.
We handle everything from a quick crown lift to let light into your garden, to a complex multi-session reduction of a mature specimen tree. All work is done with the right tools, at the right time of year, with full site cleanup.
Types of Pruning
Selective removal of interior branches to reduce density. Increases light to garden below, improves airflow, reduces wind resistance and storm risk. Maintains the natural shape of the tree.
Removal of lower branches to raise the canopy height. Ideal for clearing driveways, paths, lawns and buildings. Creates clear sightlines and lets more light into the garden underneath.
Reducing the overall size of the canopy by shortening branches back to appropriate growth points. Used when a tree has outgrown its space. Must be done correctly to avoid stress and disease.
Removal of dead, dying and diseased branches. Reduces the risk of falling branches, prevents decay spreading into healthy wood, and improves the overall appearance of the tree.
Annual structural pruning in late winter to maintain a healthy framework, remove crossing branches, and maximise fruit production. We prune citrus, feijoa, apple, plum, peach and more.
Formal and informal hedge shaping for griselinia, photinia, murraya, lilly pilly, buxus and other common Auckland hedge species. One-off or regular scheduled trimming available.
Auckland's mild climate means trees can be pruned at most times of year, but timing matters for optimal results:
Late winter dormancy period. Minimum stress, fast healing before spring growth. Best for deciduous trees and most natives.
Growing season. suitable for light thinning and deadwooding. Avoid heavy reductions that stress the tree during active growth.
Pohutukawa, jacaranda and other flowering species should be pruned immediately after flowering to avoid cutting off next year's blooms.
Dead, damaged, or immediately hazardous branches should be removed as soon as identified regardless of season.
Topping involves cutting the main trunk or major branches at arbitrary points, leaving large wounds that are susceptible to disease, decay and regrowth of weak water-shoots. It damages the tree's structural integrity and long-term health. Greenman does not top trees. Crown reduction and crown thinning achieve the same size-management goals without the damage. by cutting back to appropriate lateral branches that maintain the tree's natural form and healing ability.
As a general rule, no more than 20–25% of a tree's live canopy should be removed in a single season. Removing more than this causes significant stress, weakens the tree's ability to photosynthesise, and can trigger excessive water-shoot regrowth or leave the tree unable to recover. For larger reductions, we may recommend a staged approach over 2–3 years.
For small, accessible trees, light pruning of clearly dead branches is generally safe with the right tools and knowledge. However, working at height, near power lines, or with large heavy branches requires professional equipment and training. Incorrect cuts. particularly flush cuts or topping. can permanently damage or kill your tree. For anything more than light hand-pruning within reach from the ground, we recommend calling a professional.
