However, trees in Special Character Zones, trees on the Significant Ecological Areas (SEA) schedule, and Notable Trees listed in the Auckland Unitary Plan always require consent.
Protected trees damaged by weather or disease may qualify for an emergency exemption. Greenman advises on permit requirements as part of every free site assessment. We know East Auckland's rules well and have helped many clients navigate the council process.

In Auckland's climate, the best time to prune most trees is late winter to early spring (July–September) when trees are dormant before the new growing season. This minimises stress and reduces disease entry points. Dead, damaged or dangerous branches can and should be removed any time of year. Flowering trees like pohutukawa should be pruned after flowering finishes.
Crown thinning removes select branches from inside the canopy to improve light and airflow without changing the overall shape.
Crown lifting removes the lower branches to raise the height of the canopy. useful for clearing a path, driveway or view underneath.
Crown reduction reduces the overall size of the canopy by shortening branches back to suitable growth points. used when a tree has outgrown its space. We recommend the right approach for your specific tree and situation during the free site visit.
Most established trees benefit from a professional assessment and light pruning every 2–3 years. Fast-growing species like willows, poplars and some eucalypts may need annual attention. Fruit trees are typically pruned every year in late winter. Hedges and topiary are pruned more frequently. often twice a year during the growing season.
In Auckland's warm, humid climate, lawns need mowing every 1–2 weeks during the growing season (October–April) and every 3–4 weeks in winter. The ideal mowing height for most Auckland lawns (kikuyu, ryegrass or fescue blends) is 30–50mm. Never remove more than one-third of the blade length at once. Greenman offers regular lawn mowing contracts tailored to your property and season.
